Decadence, romance and devotion in 19th century Paris. Violetta Valéry, a courtesan in 19th century Paris, dreams of a better life. Alfredo Germont may be the man to provide her with the happy ending her story deserves. However, rigid social convention will ultimately deny her the salvation she craves. Verdi’s deeply moving opera remains as haunting and touching as ever. Praised for its insight and detail, David McVicar’s hugely popular production returns with an exciting new cast. Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury and Mexican tenor Carlos Osuna, make UK debuts as Violetta and Alfredo with celebrated Welsh baritone Jason Howard as Giorgio Germont. Conductor Julia Jones also makes her debut with the company. With exquisite designs setting the opera unmistakably in the Parisian salons and townhouses of the period, Violetta’s story is vividly told on stage.

Contemporary dance has a huge popular following in Europe, where the Nederlands Dans Theater empire reigns supreme. Within that empire Nederlands Dans Theater 2 holds a special place. It is the training ground for NDT, nurturing 17 to 23 year old dancers who’ve completed their classical ballet training, before they go on to join the ‘main’ company. Don’t be fooled though - this is no youth dance company. These are some of the most impressive and skilled dancers that you will see on a world dance stage - right at the beginning of their inevitably impressive careers. You’ll be hard pushed to find a group of dancers more physically and mentally in tune with one another than these. Their physical youth and their lack of inhibition allows them to revel in flaunting their outstanding talent on stage in a way that may later leave them, but the energy to be experienced at an NDT2 performance is rarely found elsewhere. Take the chance to experience it while you can. As soon as the repertoire is confirmed we’ll put details on the website, but we can tell you that their work is contemporary dance in the purest meaning of the term. Its main aim is to show off the physicality and skill of the dancers, allowing audiences to form their own interpretation, stories and opinions. What NDT2 brings to the mix is exuberance, quirkiness and bold confidence that make the dancers a joy to watch.

Joan Baez has to be one of the most well-respected American singer-songwriters of the past 50 years. Regarded essentially as a folk singer, with a distinctive vocal style, her music actually covers a wide range of styles from folk-rock and pop to country and gospel. Debuting at the Newport Folk Festival in 1959, Joan went on to appear at Woodstock, record over 30 albums and was responsible for focusing the world’s attention on the songs of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Steve Earle and many more. Indelibly linked to the protest song We Shall Overcome, Baez is recognized as an outstanding, courageous activist whose beliefs can’t be separated from her music; her first appearance at the Centre will definitely be one to watch.
