An exhibition by Bethan M. Hughes
Pwytho Llais (Stitching a Voice) explores how stitch creates a voice for expression, identity, and democracy. It encourages audiences to consider campaigning, petitioning, suffrage, the right to vote, and the impact of voting.
The work reflects on the power of a single vote and the fragility of democracy itself. It explores the symbolic ‘X’ mark we use for positive and negative expression, focusing on the mark we make to vote and to symbolise a kiss, and its potential for creative expression.
Bethan’s work is rooted in the rich heritage of traditional Welsh quilt designs. It is a contemporary medium for conversations about our future. Her quilts are highly textured with dense quilting stitches, improvised mark-making and piecing with a bold limited colour palette. The collection includes wholecloth quilts and larger installation pieces made up of thousands of tiny quilts.
Participatory practice and creative exchange are key factors in the development of her work, and she regularly engages with people of all ages and abilities to discover and explore themes that fascinate her.
Stitching a Voice was first exhibited at the Ruthin Craft Centre, the national centre for the applied arts.

Mae Pwytho Llais yn archwilio sut mae pwyth yn creu llais ar gyfer mynegiant, hunaniaeth, a democratiaeth. Mae’n annog cynulleidfaoedd i ystyried ymgyrchu, deisebu, etholfraint, yr hawl i bleidleisio, ac effaith pleidleisio.
Mae’r gwaith yn myfyrio ar rym y bleidlais unigol a breuder democratiaeth ei hunan. Mae’n archwilio’r marc ‘X’ symbolaidd rydyn ni’n ei ddefnyddio fel mynegiant cadarnhaol a negyddol, gan ganolbwyntio ar y marc rydyn ni’n ei osod wrth bleidleisio ac yn symbol o gusan, a’i botensial ar gyfer mynegiant creadigol.
Mae gwaith Bethan wedi’i wreiddio yn etifeddiaeth gyfoethog cynlluniau cwiltiau traddodiadol Cymru. Mae’n gyfrwng cyfoes ar gyfer sgyrsiau ynglŷn â’n dyfodol. Mae ei chwiltiau wedi eu gweadeddu’n ddwys gyda thrwch o bwythau cwiltio, marcio byrfyfyr a chydosod gyda phalet lliw cyfyngedig trawiadol. Mae’r casgliad yn cynnwys cwiltiau un-darn a darnau gosodwaith mwy wedi’u creu o filoedd o gwiltiau bychain.
Mae ymarfer cyfranogol yn ffactor allweddol yn natblygiad ei gwaith ac mae hi’n ymwneud yn gyson â phobl o bob oed a gallu er mwyn canfod ac archwilio themâu sy’n ei swyno.
Cafodd Pwytho Llais ei arddangos am y tro cyntaf yng Nghanolfan Grefft Rhuthun, y ganolfan genedlaethol ar gyfer y celfyddydau cymhwysol.
